VIDEO RELEASE: Senator Moody Introduces Resolution to End Taxpayer Funded Travel for Senators During Shutdowns

Apr 22, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senator Ashley Moody took to the Senate Floor today to demand no taxpayer-funded reimbursement for Senator’s flights home during government shutdowns:

“Business as usual, kicking the can, and pushing an issue like government funding down the line isn’t cutting it. That’s why I’m proposing a Senate Resolution to suspend taxpayer funded travel home for Senators during a lapse in funding. This incentivizes the Senate to stay in town and find a solution to fund critical law enforcement agencies,” said Senator Ashley Moody

BACKGROUND:

  • Senator Moody argued that if the Senate is asking federal employees to deal with uncertainty, Senators should be willing to stay in town and fund the agency.
  • Senator Moody’s proposed resolution would incentivize Senators to stay in town to finish deliberations and pass a bill to reopen the Department of Homeland Security.
  • On the Floor today, Senator Moody urged fellow Senators to pass the reconciliation bill that would fully fund DHS for multiple years—not just pass the issue down the line.
