WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Ashley Moody shared the following statement following legislation she cosponsored, the HALT Fentanyl Act, being signed into law by President Trump. The HALT Fentanyl Act will permanently classify fentanyl-related substances under Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act and establish penalties. It was one of the first pieces of legislation that Senator Moody signed onto after being sworn into the U.S. Senate back in January.

Senator Ashley Moody said, “Today, I was honored to join angel families at the White House as President Trump signed our HALT Fentanyl Act into law, which was one of the first bills I cosponsored when sworn into the U.S. Senate. As a parent, losing a child is the most unimaginable thing, and hearing their stories, like the Siegel Family turning their pain into advocacy, is a reminder why we cannot let up the fight.

“While Florida’s Attorney General, one of my top priorities was putting an end to the fentanyl crisis. In 2023, we saw our state’s fentanyl death rate drop 11%, while the national average decreased just 2% during the same time frame. Florida continues to lead the way. Every single day, our law enforcement officers work tirelessly to stop this deadly drug, and this commonsense bill will help hold those who peddle this poison accountable. Thank you, President Trump – together we will save lives.”

Senator Moody has been a long-time leader fighting against the scourges of fentanyl. As Florida’s Attorney General, Moody became the first to call for fentanyl to be declared a weapon of mass destruction. In 2022, Attorney General Moody called on the Biden administration to designate Mexican drug cartels foreign terrorists, an action President Trump took on his first day in office. Attorney General Moody also led the charge in the state’s historic opioid litigation – securing billions to remediate and abate the impacts of the opioid crisis in Florida.

Furthermore, as Attorney General, Moody supported legislative actions to address the opioid crisis. In 2023, alongside Gov. DeSantis, Attorney General Moody fought for passage of the State Assistance for Fentanyl Eradication Initiative — which grants money to law enforcement agencies to combat fentanyl. With $15 million allocated for SAFE grants, these investigations resulted in law enforcement seizing more than 290 pounds of fentanyl — enough to kill more than 65 million people.
