WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senator Ashley Moody today took to the Senate Floor to condemn the wave of attacks and assaults against those who dedicate their professional lives to protecting Americans, including the two young National Guard members in Washington last week and the Port St. Lucie police officer shot in the line of duty this week. Harassment of federal officers has been rising in recent months, with ICE agents facing a 1153% increase in assaults over the same time period last year. In her floor remarks today, Senator Moody also urged the Senate to pass her Halo Act, which seeks to protect officers enforcing federal immigration law while performing their job duties.
Excerpts from Senator Moody’s floor remarks below:
“Last week, we were all shocked and astonished, gutted, the night before the nation paused to give thanks for the blessings in our lives, the night before Thanksgiving, two of our country’s finest were shot down mere blocks away from the White House…
“Two young National Guardsmen, having served their country… doing their job and keeping us safe, were ambushed by a gunman, here on asylum…
“We should always be outraged when they occur—but unfortunately, a tragedy like this is happening time and time again in a growing string of incidents across this country where our nation’s guardians, whatever badge they wear…from our federal officers to our state law enforcement officers…they’re being targeted…
“An attack on those who enforce the nation’s laws is an attack on what this country was built on, it’s an attack on the people’s law, indeed it’s an attack on the rule of law…
“Over the last 10 months, federal officers and agents have faced a dangerously escalating pattern of violence, ranging from hitting, spitting, kicking and biting during arrests, to vehicle ramming, open gun fire, and the throwing of Molotov cocktails…
“I just introduced the HALO Act to protect federal officers while they conduct their official duties. And I’m proud to say that this week, more of my colleagues have signed up to cosponsor this legislation. They’ve said, ‘No more’…”
